I'm not sure if 2020 went by too quickly or too slowly, but amidst a truly challenging year, all of us at Friends of the Inyo are thankful for your constant support. Though our programs and events looked different this year, we were able to continue our dedicated work. I hope you enjoy the last issue of the Juniper in the year 2020.

In this issue of the Juniper you will read writing from our Backcountry Ranger intern and find an update on the fight to win federal recognition for the Mono Lake Kutzadika’a Tribe. Join us as he takes us through a curated set of video clips featuring some of his gnarliest descents and most daring adventures. We’ll have a conversation about how he finds balance in his life and why he cares about the protection and health of our public lands. A professional skier for nearly 20 years, Sage has been a staple of big mountain skiing, appearing in over 25 films. Reflections from our 2020 Backcountry Ranger Intern

Each year, Friends of the Inyo funds an intern for the Sierra National Forest with a generous donation from Rick Kattelmann and Sally Gaines. We are proud of the work and perspectives gained by David Carpenter in 2020 through his participation in the program. New Legislation Seeks Federal Recognition
for the Mono Lake Kutzadika’a Tribe

This Autumn, Congressman Paul Cook introduced legislation to recognize the tribal sovereignty of the Mono Lake Kutzadika’a tribe. In 2019, Friends of the Inyo submitted a letter of support urging Congressman Cook to move legislation forward recognizing the identity and history of his constituents.
