Hello,

In this issue of the Juniper, we thank a long-time partner of Friends of the Inyo and champion for the Inyo National Forest, Diana Pietrasanta for her years of service with the USFS. Thank you, Diana!

We also have some exciting news to share: our Trail Ambassadors are conducting Winter Snow-User Surveys, a program we last carried out in the '16-'17 season. In this issue, you can also learn about the newly-released Alabama Hills Management Plan, as well as read a press release from local Tribes speaking out against mining on Conglomerate Mesa.

Finally, remember to buy your tickets to our next Virtual Event, "Birds of Owens Lake." We hope to see you there in only a few weeks!

Sincerely,

Kyle Hamada
Communications Director

Inyo National Forest Champion Retires

Congratulations to Diana Pietrasanta on her retirement after her many years of service working for the Inyo National Forest. Dianna worked as a valuable partner to Friends of the Inyo, having assisted with our decades-long work on the National Forest plan revisions, played an important role in the Inyo recreation collaborative, and served as a fair and knowledgeable representative of the diverse interests in our National Forest. We will miss working with her and we hope to honor her many years of service to our public lands. Thank you, Diana!

Trail Ambassadors Participate in Winter Snow-User Survey

This winter, Friends of the Inyo is excited to reprise a program last undertaken in the winter of 2016-17: the Winter Snow-User Surveys! We are collecting data on how much use our winter trailheads see, while also acting as a resource for local information and any comments, queries, or concerns the public may have. We will also be traveling to Monache Meadows on the southern end of the Inyo National Forest for a three-day weekend of data collection during Presidents’ Weekend. Learn more by reading Alex's full blog post.

The Alabama Hills Management Plan Released

Love the Alabama Hills as much as we do? The Bureau of Land Management released the comprehensive management plan for the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area on January 15th, 2021. Camping? Climbing? Off-road exploring? Read Bryan's full blog post to read our memo highlighting key aspects of the plan. You can also read the BLM’s press release and management plan in their entireties online.

Tribal Nations speak out on Conglomerate Mesa

Friends of the Inyo stands in support as Tribal Nations call out K2 Gold for ignoring their consultation and request a stop to mining at Conglomerate Mesa. Read the Timbisha Shoshone and Lone Pine Paiute Shoshone Tribes' press release below.

Join us for an exclusive evening exploring
the Birds of Owens Lake

Friends of the Inyo is proud to present an exclusive virtual event featuring Rich Cimino, an international birding expert and professional guide with 50 years of experience, and local photographer and popular Owens Lake Bird Festival leader, Martin Powell.

Learn about the birds that stop at Owens Lake as they travel the globe. Rich will be sharing his knowledge and trends he's seeing, with the help of beautiful photos taken by Martin who will offer commentary and backstory on his stunning images.

100% of the event proceeds will be applied to fund Friends of the Inyo's programs in 2021 that help protect and care for the Eastern Sierra's public lands.
